Paul Harris

In recent years, skyrocketing prices for Chinese art – especially paintings and porcelain – have been a ubiquitous feature of the salerooms and, occasionally, the headlines. More than £50 million was bid for a vase in a British auction house.

Paul Harris explains some of the pitfalls in seeking to acquire these beautiful objects, having bought many fakes unintentionally. He distinguishes between fakes, forgeries and reproductions and explains the basics of markings, faults and other characteristics which enable the expert to form an opinion on the real age of an object. He will be bringing some examples of Chinese artefacts with him for the lecture.

Paul Harris works professionally as a writer and lecturer and, formerly, was a journalist who lived and worked in many countries, including China where he was an editor on The Shanghai Daily.
