Professor Neil Sinyard

Born in Hull in 1889, J Arthur Rank established himself as not only as a vitally important presence in the British film industry but as someone who was absolutely crucial to its future. This talk will consider his contribution to British film, from its origins in the mid-1930’s to its peak in the immediate post-war years, when Rank’s support helped give rise to some of the greatest films of our national cinema.

Neil Sinyard is Emeritus Professor of Film Studies at the University of Hull and a Visiting Professor of Film at the University of Lincoln. He has published more than 25 books and well over 100 articles on the cinema. He has also published books on Graham Greene and Dr Samuel Johnson.
